Manna - Night Sessions ...

Granted, Manna is a biblical name, but other than the intention to feed your soul, any religious statement is alien to our goals.
Manna focuses on leftfield dance and electronic music, intending to create events out of the ordinary, musically touching upon house, techno, minimal, dubstep, electronica and all their possible subdivisions, Manna started out as a musical Sunday afternoon concept, but is now venturing into organising parties at night, with a first collaboration with Bota Bar coming up. For this
first Night Sessions edition, we have invited Roger 23. Part of the Swayzak Soundsystem and firmly established as a dj that spins deep, moving and relentless house and electro, he's also an accomplished producer with releases on Playhouse, Volt, etc. Accompanied by Manna residents MCK and Sensu, the first Manna Night Session will blow the underground into the overground once again, right until dawn this time.

Paired with a mountainous knowledge of music and an innate sensibility for hypnotizing people under his electronic spell, world renowned dj, producer and musical magician Roger23, descends upon Saarbrucken.
Mixing electro, house, techno and futuristic ear candy. His style and rhythm have catapulted him to play at many of the major clubs and cities throughout Europe including Berlin, Paris, Istanbul & London. Sophisticated, spontaneous, energetic and dropping a beat so sick your hips will have the flu. His magic wand is ready, yet again, to transform the dance floor into an intergalactic musical adventure. All you need is your spacesuits and soon you'll be dancing on the surface of the moon.

Sensu

Eclectic, kind of minimal dj from Brussels, Belgium. Spinning minimal house and techno, dub, dubstep, grime, reggae and experimental electronic music. Producing tracks as Kiono together with Koltempleister of Silur, fusing minimal, dubstep and experimental influences. Former Statik Dancin' resident, started out as experimental and ambient dj and these influences are still present in his dj sets today. A member of the Plain and Manna collectives, Sensu's sets are firmly rooted in the electronic underground, with an ever present ambition to make the unheard heard, to unveal the texture of the space between beats, without ever forgetting the beats themselves.

MCK

One of those hillbillies from the east of Belgium, now living in brussels. Started as a classical trumpet player, then got in touch with electronic dance music in 1990, influenced by his older brother and dj Mandrax who went out to clubs like boccaccio, la rocca, etc... Started buying records in '97 and has been organising parties and concerts since '98 - first with Klangforschungost, then programming and co-programming the electronic music line-up of the Alive festival from '99 until '02 and at present part of Meakusma and Manna and member of the Lamadameaveclechien collective.

Twenty years ago, three young men on Chicago's South Side sat down together and wrote a song about the transcendent power of music. On the other side of the Atlantic, a young guy in a provincial Belgian town heard the fruits of their labour and smiled. You'll have to ask DJ Sensu yourself what that record – It's All Right by Sterling Void & Paris Brightledge (co-written with Marshall Jefferson) – means to him. Inspired both by Marvin Gaye's What's Going On and the vision and passion of British rock icons such as John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Roger Waters and Robert Plant, Void, Brightledge and Jefferson produced the first socially conscious piece of Chicago House music, but with a message that still resonates today: there's a whole heap of trouble in the world, but, just for one night, for the length of one song even, music can bring people together. And it will continue to do so, in spite of wars, despots and dictators: "Generations will come and go but there's one thing for sure, music is our life's foundation and will succeed all the nations to come."

What can a guy with two turntables and a mixer do or say about the crisis in Iraq (or the crisis in Belgium)? Nothing much. Yet when Americans and Iraqis, Kurds and Turks, or Flemings and Walloons hear a DJ drop a killer tune and respond with the same enthusiasm, maybe that says everything and is enough. Is it minimal, is it dubstep, is it techno, is it disco? It's all pop music and it's all right. "The music plays forever…"

recently saw a performance of Stockhausen's Montag from his opera cycle Licht, utterly outerworldly music and the performance verging on the ridiculous, Stockhausen's universe requires an open mind and isn't necesarily all that modern anymore, but still, there is something to be said about his blatant originality and disinterest for music's conventions (although he does respect his own conventions very much)

"The possibility of music in global terms beyond First World, beyond Third World, beyond High-Tech Art classical, beyond pop..."

"...an ideal blend of traditional music from around the world using Western forms and modern electronics, forming a kind of contemporary folk music from unknown and imaginary regions..."

At a Nils Petter Molvaer concert in Berlin last year, I was reminded of Jon Hassell's fascinating musical output and the relevance his music still has. It passes into realms that other musical forms can only dream of reaching. Explicitly influenced by "Third World" artists such as Raga guru Pandit Pran Nath, as well as Western modern composers like Karlheinz Stockhausen, Hassell defined his Fourth World concept as music that went beyond what you would expect from its sources. He has performed on albums by Brian Eno, Talking Heads, 808 State and David Sylvian, among others.

What fascinates me most about his sound is the texture, which is at times extremely dense, but never heavy. Through the use of bass and rhythmic patterns, he achieves a solid groove which gives context to his often heavily processed trumpet playing. Some of his best records are firmly rooted in 80's experimental music production with a crisp sound design and a lot of attention to detail.

Hassell's trumpet playing is also heavily influenced by Miles Davis, with Miles' "On The Corner" being one of his primary influences. The frenetic pace some of Hassell's pieces certainly cites Miles during his "electric period".

Personally there are four albums I absolutely cherish: "Possible Musics", "Dream Theory of Malaya", "Magic Realism" on the EG imprint and "Power Spot" on ECM.

For me easily the biggest surprise of 2005, the Various Production crew has come up with some of the most amazing tunes in years. With breathtaking disrespect for conventions, they have managed to make an enormous impact on the underground music scene and are surely one of the major electronic acts of the future. While their 12”s have a very obvious grime basis, it’s on the four 7”s they have released so far that their true force comes to shore. Mixing and intertwining genres, from grime to r&b to folk, and everything you could imagine in between, these records (beautifully designed as well by the way) make for an exhilarating ride through past, present and future pop music, with a distinct leftfield edge, that leaves you baffled. My personal favourite so far is the glorious Hater/Byker. Basically a pop tune with analogue electronic backing, it goes places ordinary 3-minute tracks cannot take you. Although there’s not really a direct musical link, I would compare the impact and innovation of these tracks to Arthur Russell’s beautiful pop music experiments in the 80’s, conveying an outerworldly strangeness that is both haunting and downright catchy.
